Why does a single sentence need a period?

Because it can convey emotion or lack thereof? Of course, if one is excited, the exclamation point works for that. So maybe, for a single sentence, none ought to be needed. Rather like texting with my daughters. The last sentence (or the sentence if there is only one in the text) never has a period at the end.

Often I conclude with … meaning there’s more to say beyond what words are capable of …
